Local gardeners celebrate progress of Scriber Creek restoration
Several volunteers from the Scriber Creek restoration project and members of the Edmonds Floretum Garden Club, Lynnwood’s Alderwood Garden Club and Woodinville’s Cottage Gardeners Garden Club gathered in the rain Thursday to witness the fruits of their efforts in planting native plants along Scriber Creek. Since Nov. 4, many of the native seedlings have sprouted to become saplings over a fresh layer of mulch. However, there are still many invasive reed canary grass and English ivy coating the creek bed.

Chelan County Rape Charges Dropped Against Former Seattle Teacher
A 53-year-old former King County middle school teacher is cleared of wrongdoing in Chelan County after prosecutors dropped charges against him in a rape and assault case. Darren D. Hunter was accused of sexually assaulting a woman at his home in Chelan during a drug deal in July of last year.

Over the past 50 years, Seattle Pride has been expanding, both in attendees and participants. This year, over 300,000 people were expected to attend the parade and festivities at Seattle Center. The parade route was less than a mile, but the thousands of participants meant the parade would take five hours to make it to the end. Led by the Dykes on Bikes, the throaty roar of motorcycles echoed off of downtown buildings as residents stood on balconies or looked out windows as the parade passed them by. The length of the route meant some areas near the stages were packed 15–20 people deep.

Does it seem like you hear about a new shooting investigation every time you turn on the news? Unfortunately, gun violence is becoming conventional in the United States. Harborview Medical Center, the only Level I trauma center for Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho, saw 34 people this May injured from firearm injuries. From June 1-24, they had already seen 46 cases. Nationally, the U.S. surgeon general recently declared gun violence a public health crisis.
