Giant Eagle announced Monday that it's selling its GetGo convenience store business to the owner of Circle K, but both parties say the grocery store chain's myPerks loyalty program will continue.

The transaction between Giant Eagle and purchaser Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc., based in Laval, Quebec, Canada, is expected to close in 2025, according to a news release from Couche-Tard.

Through myPerks, customers will still be “able to earn perks and redeem for up to free fuel and free groceries," Giant Eagle CEO Bill Artman said in a prepared video statement.

A fact sheet provided by Giant Eagle said the myPerks program will expand.

Artman said the deal "also gives us the ability to invest into our supermarket business and our pharmacy business. We’re going to do that through a better value proposition, lower prices. We’re going to build new stores, and we’re going to remodel stores and really invest back into our communities.”

Couche-Tard also announced on Monday that it had sent a bid to Japan's Seven & i Holdings, which operates 7-Eleven. The New York Times reports that Couche-Tard plans to acquire all outstanding shares from Seven & i and that the Japanese firm has a market value of above $38 million.

Giant Eagle, based in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, employs about 3,500 people and operates roughly 270 GetGo convenience retail and fueling locations across Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland and Indiana, according to the release. GetGo's various models include standalone kiosks, open-concept stores and made-to-order foods.

Artman said the deal "gives us an opportunity to lean into our team members. We have excellent team members who work hard everyday to provide a great guest experience. It’s our job to set them up for success.”

The deal is subject to Federal Trade Commission approval and closing conditions, according to the fact sheet from Giant Eagle.

A Giant Eagle spokeswoman said the business is unable to provide additional comment aside from what it shared in its fact sheet and video and what Couche-Tard provided in its release. The Beacon Journal was unable to immediately reach Couche-Tard for comment on Monday.

The Couche-Tard press release states that neither party is disclosing the transaction's financial terms.

"As we learn more about the GetGo business, it is clear that it has built a strong and passionate customer base with high quality stores staffed by talented and engaged teams working to deliver a great experience," Couche-Tard President and CEO Brian Hannasch said in a prepared statement. "We have deep respect for its management and people as well as its outstanding food and loyalty programs. We look forward to growing together as we learn from and continue GetGo's innovative approaches to serving its local customers and communities."

Giant Eagle operates more than 470 Giant Eagle, Market District and GetGo locations, according to Forbes .

Couche-Tard's operations include more than 6,700 stores in 31 countries and territories, per the release.

Circle K has more than 6,700 U.S. locations, according to its website .
