The National Weather Service says residents should take extra precautions to ensure they are not exposed to the heat too much particularly if they are going to be outdoors and drink plenty of fluids.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for a number of Ohio counties particularly west of Interstate 71 including Lorain and Ashland counties for Tuesday.

What Akron-area schools are closed because of the heat?

The heat has prompted some northern Ohio schools to close for the day including Holy Family in Stow, Stow High School, the Summit Academy Secondary School in Akron and Saint Patrick Elementary in Kent.

In all nearly 30 schools in northern Ohio are closed or plan to send kids home early for the day with the bulk being in Cuyahoga County.

There is also an air quality alert in effect for all of northern Ohio as soaring temperatures are creating dangerous pollution conditions.

Residents are encouraged to curb unnecessary trips by car, fuel after sunset and delay mowing lawns.

When will it rain in Akron?

Some relief, albeit minor, is coming in the form of rain and storms.

The weather service warns the passage of a cold front late Tuesday will cool things off slightly but may bring severe storms.
