A piece of Akron basketball history will make its way to the auction block once again, according to a report from “The Athletic.”

The St. Vincent-St. Mary jersey LeBron James donned for the photoshoot that landed him on the cover of “Sports Illustrated” will go up for sale at Julien’s Auctions in Hong Kong.

That shoot and accompanying story from late writer Grant Wahl would anoint James “The Chosen One,” a title he has more than lived up to in his soon to be 21 years in the NBA.

James wore the jersey, which last sold for more than half a million dollars in 2021 at Julien’s. Prior to that, it was sold at auction by the St. Vincent-St. Mary classmate James gave it to after his junior year, according to a report.

There may be no better time for the jersey’s current owner to sell the jersey, which is expected to upwards of $2 million, according to the report.

James is coming off earning another crown jewel in his career, getting MVP honors in the Paris Olympics along with a gold medal, which just adds to a very long list of accomplishments . The SI cover represents his initial crowning.

Because of that and another factor, there may be no better time to sell. The jersey baseball icon Babe Ruth was wearing when he called his shot in Game 3 of the 1932 World Series, a moment etched in baseball lore, sold for $24.12 million last week.
