    The Buchtel and Archbishop Hoban football teams are set to meet Friday night at Dowed Field in Akron.

    Buchtel and Hoban each enter Week 3 with a 1-1 record. The Griffins will play their third road game in a row and the Knights will play their third straight home game.

    Buchtel's seventh offensive possession ended in a fumbled punt that Hoban's Nick Crawford fell on in the end zone and kicker Jeremy Hammel made his fifth extra point kick. Hoban's Patrick Kinsell forced the fumble. 1:12 to go in the second quarter.

    Hoban's Payton Cook grabbed an interception with 4:40 to go in the second quarter to end Buchtel's sixth offensive possession. Hoban has forced a turnover on all six of Buchtel's offensive possessions.

    Buchtel, Hoban football records in 2023

    Buchtel went 6-6 last season and shared the City Series championship with East. The Griffins defeated Cardinal Mooney 26-16 in the opening round of the Division IV playoffs before losing to Canton South 27-26.

    Hoban finished 13-2 last season and were the Division II state runner-up. The Knights defeated Ellet 39-7, Barberton 41-7, Painesville Riverside 21-0 and Walsh Jesuit 30-6 in Region 5 playoff games, beat Avon 17-14 in a state semifinal and lost to Massillon in the state final 7-2.

    What the Buchtel football team did in Week 1 and Week 2 of the 2024 season

    Buchtel won at Hoover 22-13 in Week 1. Daurean Johnson and Marcus Britt blocked Hoover's 44-yard, go-ahead field goal attempt with 16 seconds left and junior Karter Dawson returned it 62 yards for a touchdown to clinch a win. Senior Stevie Diamond ran for TDs of 11 and 5 yards, and ran in a 2-point conversion. Buchtel senior DaJuan Owens also added a 2-point conversion.

    Buchtel lost to host Warren Harding 20-18 in Week 2. Diamond threw three TD passes — two to Dawson and one to Xavier Wilson.

    Jeremiah Manuel, Richard Humphrey, Quadire Harvey, Lenox Roberts, Dwight Shade and Jordan Holloway are leaders on Buchtel's defense.

    What the Hoban football team did in Week 1 and Week 2 of the 2024 season

    Hoban lost to visiting Severn Spalding (Maryland) 28-14 in Week 1. Spalding is the two-time reigning Maryland A state champion. QB Ethan Roksandich completed 4 of 9 passes for 59 yards, ran for a 1-yard TD in his Hoban debut. Tylan Boykin took a lateral from Roksandich and threw a 12-yard TD pass to Jackson Callaway. Knights sophomore Brayton Feister ran for 86 yards on 18 carries.

    Hoban defeated visiting Don Bosco Prep (New Jersey) 21-7 in Week 2 with Feister rushing for 125 yards and three TDs on 24 carries. The Knights finished with 305 yards on 40 carries (7.6 average). Roksandich rushed 10 times for 91 yards and Elbert Hill IV had 51 yards on three carries.

    Hill, John Johnson and Tanner Mintz each recorded an interception for Hoban against Bosco and Nick Crawford added two sacks. Knights senior linebacker Eli Lee is an Ohio State recruit. Boykin, an Eastern Michigan recruit, is a talented defensive back.

    Who are the head coaches for the Buchtel and Hoban football teams?

    • Bryan Williams is in his fourth season as Buchtel's coach and has a 18-18 record. Williams is piloting a Buchtel program that won Division II state championships in 1987 and 1988 under former coach Tim Flossie.
    • Buchtel was a state runner-up in 1995 and 1996 in Division II under Flossie and in 2010 in Division III under former coach Ricky Powers, a star running back on the two state title teams. The Griffins also were a state semifinalist in Division II in 2000 and in Division III in 2005.
    • Williams was a state championship track and field athlete and played football at Buchtel. Williams graduated from Buchtel in 2005, Valley Forge Military Academy in 2007 and the University of Akron in 2009. He played running back and defensive back for the Griffins, Cadets and Zips.

    • Williams earned four letters in football at Buchtel, helping the Griffins win three City Series titles, and compete in the state playoffs in 2001, 2002 and 2004. Williams earned All-Ohio first-team honors while at Buchtel, and was an All-Mid-American Conference selection at Akron.
    • Williams also has pro experience as a football player after being an undrafted free agent with the Cleveland Browns for a few months in 2009. Between 2010 and 2013, he played in the Continental Indoor Football League, the Arena Football League and with the Edmonton Eskimos in the Canadian Football League.
    • Williams spent five years as the Strength and Conditioning Coordinator at St. Vincent-St. Mary and was a running backs coach for three years with STVM before being hired at Buchtel.

    • Tim Tyrrell is in his 12th season as Hoban's coach. He has a 130-23 record at Hoban and a 195-74 mark in his 23rd season overall. Tyrrell has led Hoban to five state championships (Division III in 2015 and 2016 and Division II in 2017, 2018 and 2020) and three state runner-up finishes (Division II in 2021, 2022 and 2023). Hoban was a state semifinalist in in 2002 and 2008 prior to his arrival.
    • Tyrrell grew up swimming with the Youngstown YMCA Neptunes and the Logan Swim Club, and was a goalkeeper on youth soccer teams. He was a two-year starter at quarterback in football and a three-year starter as a guard/forward in basketball at Youngstown Ursuline before graduating in 1993.

    • Tyrrell lettered as a tight end at Youngstown State from 1995-97 under Jim Tressel. Tyrrell was an assistant football coach at Ursuline in 1998, YSU in 1999 and 2000 and St. Thomas Aquinas in 2001 before embarking on his head coaching career.
    • Tyrrell compiled a 26-33 record as the Aquinas coach from 2002-07 and went 39-18 as the Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School coach in Hollywood, Florida, from 2008-12.
