Akron residents in Wards 1, 3 and 5 have another chance at scoring a free Ring doorbell camera from the city.

From 8 a.m. July 24 to 4 p.m. July 25, residents in Wards 1, 3 and 5 who have not previously received a doorbell camera can apply for their free camera via the online application at akroncitycouncil.org/news/RingWards135.

Applicants who are approved to receive a camera will be notified via email.

Homeownership will be verified through Summit County property records. Renters must submit an attestation form signed by their landlord with their online application.

The form can be downloaded at Attestation 2024.pdf (akroncitycouncil.org).Distribution is limited to one camera per applicant per household. Cameras will be distributed until supplies are exhausted.

Individuals who previously received a doorbell camera are not eligible to participate in this phase of the program.

Residents can confirm that they reside in one of these wards at akroncitycouncil.org/find-my-ward. Applications submitted from residents living outside of Wards 1, 3,and 5 won't be considered.

Cameras will be distributed during scheduled hours at the offices of Akron City Council. According to a council news release, the cameras are a part of the city's effort to combat neighborhood crime and package theft.

The initiative started in 2022 in Wards 3, 4 and 5, funded with $45,990 in federal American Rescue Plan Act money. The first phase attracted 724 applications, with over 400 cameras distributed across the three eligible wards.

The second phase of the program opened in May; 7,536 applications were received and processed for 3,000 cameras (300 per ward). All applicants were notified by email of their application status, the release said, with 74% of the available cameras distributed to date.
