This week, 19 states and Puerto Rico are rolling out their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits to qualifying residents.

SNAP benefits are paid to low- and no-income households that are in need of financial assistance to pay for food and groceries. Households qualify for SNAP if their net monthly income is at or below 100% of the federal poverty level. Benefits are typically allotted over a one-year period. Funds are loaded onto electronic benefit transfer cards, and funds can be used at participating stores including major chains such as Walmart and Costco.

According to the Department of Human Services, a family of eight is eligible to receive a maximum of $1,751 worth of SNAP benefits. Each individual in addition to a family of eight is eligible to receive $219.
