ALABASTER – Alabaster will soon begin work on the addition of three more pickleball courts at Patriots Park to help meet local demand for the country’s fastest growing sport.

During an Alabaster City Council meeting on July 22, the Council approved multiple resolutions to help with the construction of three new pickleball courts at Patriots Park which will be made possible thanks to the help of Shelby County.

“Thanks to our great partnership with Shelby County, Alabama, construction will soon begin on three new pickleball courts at Patriots Park next to the park’s existing courts,” read an official Facebook post by the city of Alabaster. “This sport has exploded in popularity, and we are excited to open these new amenities for our residents in the coming months.”

According to Fred Hawkins, director of environmental, engineering and building services for Alabaster, the new pickleball courts will be larger than the current courts in order to comply with the standards of the pickleball association. The new courts will also be rotated 90 degrees in order to face a different direction due to complaints by residents of the sun impeding vision during play.

“We’re just excited to finally be able to add this,” Councilmember Stacy Rakestraw said. “We’re partnering with Shelby County and we’ve got four contractors that we approved to come and do the different parts of the work to get those done. So, that’s something that’s exciting for Ward 3 and the north part of town.”

During the meeting, the Alabaster City Council approved a resolution agreeing to a Memorandum of Understanding with Shelby County PARA Group for construction, labor and materials for pickleball courts at Patriots Park in an amount not to exceed $20,279.64. Additionally, a resolution was approved that authorized an agreement with C&W Concrete Construction, Inc for the concrete work needed for the three additional pickleball courts in an amount not to exceed $44,715.

The Council approved an agreement with S&G Waldrop Electric Inc. for electrical work for the additional pickleball courts at Patriots Park in an amount not to exceed $37,000. The city also entered into an agreement with Musco Sports Lighting LLC relating for lighting equipment for the project in an amount not to exceed $37,500.

Additionally, the Alabaster City Council approved a resolution for an agreement with Metro Fence to provide fencing for the three new pickleball courts in an amount not to exceed $14,936. The fencing will be situated in between each of the courts.
