Press release from Florida Department of Education

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Today, Florida Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr., announced August’s chosen books for the Commissioner’s Book of the Month , a monthly reading challenge to promote literacy and reading engagement in preK-12 schools.

Each month, Commissioner Diaz highlights five recommended books – one per selected grade range. For this month’s selection, the Commissioner recommended books that are included on Florida’s B.E.S.T. Standards reading list for grades K-12.

“As the school year begins, students should be reading books that make them excited to learn and prepare them for the school year,” said Commissioner of Education Manny Diaz, Jr.  “I encourage all students to open a book this month and ready their mind for classes over the next school year.”

The Commissioner’s recommendations for August 2024 are:

    • PreK – I Am Too Absolutely Small for School by Lauren Child
    • K-2 – Give Bees a Chance by Bethany Barton
    • 3-5 – Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White
    • 6-8 – Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
    • 9-12 – The Life of Julius Caesar by Plutarch

The selections for each month can be found on the Commissioner’s Book of the Month page of the FDOE website.
