WUFT’s FANFARES & FIREWORKS – July 3, 2024
This episode features details on the 2024 edition of WUFT’s FANFARES & FIREWORKS. The event will be on Wednesday, July 3 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the University of Florida Bandshell at Flavet Field in Gainesville. Musical performances include The Late Night Losers, Buko Boys, Madwomen and the Gainesville Community Band and Gainesville Pops under the direction of Jay Watkins. The fireworks by Skylighters of Florida and presented by Attorney Dan Newlin begin as soon as it gets dark at 9:30 p.m. During the event there will be a WUFT PBS Kids Zone sponsored by Children’s Trust of Alachua County from 6 to 9 p.m. Florida Credit Union is the title sponsor, and the premiere supporting sponsors are the City of Gainesville and Covering Florida.

The Gainesville Fine Arts Association (GFAA) invites submissions for its 4th National Biennial Juried Exhibition – HEAT. The theme for this exhibition is informed and inspired by Jeff Goodell’s searing new book, The Heat Will Kill You First: Life and Death on a Scorched Planet. GFAA are seeking artworks that relate to the first order threat and prime mover of all other impacts of our climate crisis – HEAT. Participants can use any medium and artists must be 18 or older to submit. Only original works will be considered, no substitutes and no reproductions will be accepted. All artwork must be ready to hang with proper hardware.

The UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce that the July "Plant of the Month" is cherry tomatoes. Cherry tomatoes derived their name because the tomato clusters were viewed as resembling the shape of a cherry and grow in clusters like cherries. Cherry tomatoes range in a variety of colors (red, yellow, orange, and purple) and sizes can be as small as a thumb tip or to the size of a golf ball and are primarily round in size but can be slightly oblong. Cherry tomatoes promote excellent health benefits and are full of vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin C, A, E, and potassium.
