Repurposed shipping containers are a quickly deployed, state-of-the-art answer to crisis in spay/neuter access

Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter ( FAAS ) has announced plans to open an innovative, state-of-the-art spay/neuter clinic on North Loop Road on Bay Farm Island by the end of 2024.

Because of the urgent need for spay/neuter and other medical services, the organization opted to open the FAAS Animal Medical Services & Training (FAMST) Campus using eight repurposed shipping containers rather than a two-story building that would take years to complete.

“With the severe shortage in access to spay/neuter surgeries, we thought outside the box and decided to use shipping containers to create a beautiful, vital, lifesaving campus,” says John L. Lipp, FAAS CEO. “We’re thrilled that instead of years, the clinic will open in months.”

The FAMST Campus will help ease a severe shortage in access to spay/neuter surgeries—a key factor in stopping rampant pet overpopulation. The campus will service not only the 1,000 or more animals in FAAS’s care every year, but also other East Bay shelters that normally have to travel as far as Salinas for these procedures.

The new campus also will offer low-cost spay/neuter services to the public.
