Blue 2 Fire Continues to Rage, Zero Containment, 7455 acres and Growing
The Blue 2 Fire in the Lincoln National Forest near Ruidoso continues to spread and is still at zero containment. An update from the government of Ruidoso stated that; ”the Blue 2 Fire is an active wildfire burning in the White Mountain Wilderness of Lincoln National Forest, Lincoln County, NM. Since its detection on May 16, 2024, the fire has expanded to 7,455 acres, situated approximately 8 miles north of Ruidoso. Resources employed include 699 personnel, 13 crews, 41 engines, 8 helicopters, 9 bulldozers, and 11 Water Tenders. Efforts include clearing debris and protecting structures. Firefighters have burned out areas in Runnels using aerial ignitions to strengthen firelines. A hotshot crew and rappelling firefighters worked on the southeastern side, building handlines to halt the fire spread. Resources focused on cooling hotspots and reinforcing firelines. Environmental challenges include steep terrain and changing winds.”

Alamogordo Airport Ordinance Revision Sparks Controversy, Airport Operates at a Loss Annually
The Alamogordo Airport operates at a near $100k deficit every year and the city has suggest upgrades are needed and for economic development has wanted to bring air service to the city. One of the concerns that staff has brought to the commission is the airport loses money every year and does not have the funds for matching grants to even do basic airport maintenance. As a result the city manager has tasked staff with a review of ordinances and fees to address the budget shortfall.

A complex team brings additional resources and management capabilities to manage the Indios Fire. Incident objectives include protecting values at risk and meeting Santa Fe National Forest Plan objectives by reintroducing fire into a fire dependent ecosystem. In a report released this week Cannabis or Marijuana use now exceed alcohol use in the United States. Conducted annually, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) provides nationally representative data on the use of tobacco, alcohol, and drugs; substance use disorders; receipt of substance use treatment; mental health issues; and the use of mental health services among the civilian, noninstitutionalized population aged 12 or older in the United States. NSDUH estimates allow researchers, clinicians, policymakers, and the general public to better understand and improve the nation’s behavioral health. The most recent report covers 2021/22 and was released in May of 2024.
Safety Corridor and Partial Trail Closure at White Sands National Park Remains in Effect
The White Sands National Park is open and welcoming to visitors but a small and limited safety corridor starting at mile 3 and ending at mile 5.5 along Dunes Drive continues to be in place until further notice. Within the safety corridor stopping, parking or exiting a motor vehicle is prohibited unless given expressed written consent or directed by a law enforcement ranger. The area south of Dunes Drive within the safety corridor is closed to all foot, horse, and other traffic.
