Nick Mavar , a former deckhand who appeared on Deadliest Catch , has sadly died. He was 59.

The news was reported on Friday, June 14, after the Police Chief of Bristol Bay Borough Police Department in Alaska told TMZ that the Discovery Channel alum died on Thursday, June 13, while in Naknek.

According to the outlet, Mavar is said to have died after a "medical emergency," but specific details about his exact cause of death have not yet been disclosed.

Mavar starred on Deadliest Catch as a F/V Northwestern crew member from 2005 to 2021, and he also made appearances on a number of spinoff series, including Deadliest Catch: Siberian Winter and Deadliest Catch: The Bait .

He left Deadliest Catch after suffering a ruptured appendix in December 2020, a health scare that was documented on one of his final episodes.

Mavar took legal action as a result of the situation by suing Captain Sig Hansen and his wife, June , for more than $1 million in damages.

According to local Alaska outlet Anchorage Daily News , Mavar accused Northwestern's owners of failing to "have an adequate plan in place" to get medical attention during COVID-19, which he in turn claimed caused him serious medical problems.

Mavar's suit said this led to the "failure to assure plaintiff was promptly taken to the Dutch Harbor medical clinic for an examination and assessment of plaintiff’s medical condition."

The docs also allege that the delay caused the rupture of his appendix, which led to infections and surgeries he believes "would not have occurred had the appendix removed prior to rupture."

In response, Hansen later blamed the production company for the situation, filing a suit in May 2023 to seek damages related to Mavar's injuries.
