Alaska Airlines reported earnings Wednesday. Net income was down slightly to $220 million in the most recent quarter, coming out of $2.9 billion in revenue. The big merger with Hawaiian Airlines continues apace. But alongside those numbers came an announcement that the company is looking to seriously expand its higher-end offerings.

United Airlines set a record as it carried 44.4 million passengers — the highest for any second quarter in its history, the company said Thursday (July 18). “We’re running the best operation in our history,” United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said during the earnings call for the quarter ended June 30. “We’ve now led the industry in domestic growth for three straight years. That cannot happen by accident.”

Alaska Air Group turns profitable again in the second quarter

Alaska Airlines has announced plans to retrofit nearly 220 aircraft with more premium seats, adding 1.3 million premium seats annually to the carrier’s mainline fleet. Alaska Airlines will be retrofitting three variants of its Boeing 737s with more premium seats. Some planes will get more first class seats, while other planes will get more Premium Class seats (the name of Alaska’s extra legroom economy section).

DALLAS (AP) — American Airlines put an unspecified number of employees on leave for their involvement in an incident in which several Black passengers were removed from a flight in Phoenix, allegedly over a complaint about body odor. American CEO Robert Isom wrote in a note to staff that the incident was unacceptable.  “I am incredibly disappointed by what happened on that flight and the breakdown of our procedures,” Isom said in the note this week. “It contradicts our values. … We fell short of our commitments and failed our customers in this incident.” Three Black passengers sued the airline last month, charging that they were removed from the January flight because of racial discrimination. They said they were told that a white male flight attendant had complained about an unidentified passenger’s body odor.
