In today’s Women’s Health Wednesday, we receive more insight from Dr. Jacqueline Busingye, Chief of Ophthalmology at Albany Stratton VA Medical Center. Dr. Busingye says women tend to live longer which is one reason they tend to fall victim to more vision problems as they age – things like age-related macular degeneration.  She also noted that postmenopausal women are much more likely to deal with dry eye problems related to hormonal changes in women. In addition, changing hormones during pregnancy can impact vision, lead to dry eyes, discomfort and vision loss.

Dr. Busingye also told NEWS10ABC systemic diseases like diabetes can increase a person’s chances of having vision problems. She noted from age 40 and above, women and men should be getting their eyes checked on a regular basis as part of their routine health checks. As for women and makeup, she says washing your face every night and throwing out mascara every few months can help cut down on potential eye infections.
