DOBSON — Three of Surry Community College’s graduating students were recognized for their efforts and achievements. The students were presented with their awards by Dr. David Shockley, President of SCC, at a college Board of Trustees meeting.
Jay Mitchell was the recipient of the North Carolina Community College Academic Excellence Award for SCC. This is the highest academic honor the NCCCS bestows on its students. The North Carolina Community College System consists of 58 colleges with a collective enrollment of 650,000 students. Annually, each of the 58 community colleges selects one student as their recipient. Eligibility requirements include completion of 12 semester hours in a curriculum degree program, a cumulative GPA no less than 3.25, and exhibited leadership and involvement within their community.
“I am extremely honored to have the opportunity to receive the Academic Excellence Award for 2024, and I am very grateful for the staff and instructors at Surry Community College who have inspired me to become a better version of myself,” said Mitchell.
Mitchell graduated from SCC with an Associate in Arts and an Associate in Science on May 11, 2024. Mitchell will graduate from Surry Early College on May 21, 2024. In the fall, Mitchell will transfer to Campbell University where he will major in engineering.
Meredith Mauldin was the recipient of the Daryl Mitchell Outstanding Student Award for the Western Region of the North Carolina Comprehensive Community College Student Government Association (N4CSGA). Daryl Mitchell played a significant role in the success of the N4CSGA during his tenure as president. The award is given in his honor to a student who demonstrates the leadership qualities upon which the organization is founded. The students honored with this award demonstrate the six pillars of character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship. Those honored use the six pillars of character to serve their community and local community college.
Mauldin said, “I was so honored to be considered for the award, but it was amazing to be selected as the Western Division’s representative for the Daryl Mitchell Outstanding Student Award. I am very grateful for my SGA advisors. I owe everything to them.”
On May 11, 2024, Mauldin graduated from SCC with an Associate in Arts, an Associate in Associate in Arts Teacher Prep, and a Spanish Language Certificate. Mauldin will transfer to North Carolina State University in the fall.
Hunter Sherrill received the Governor Robert W. Scott Student Leadership Award. This award acknowledges and recognizes students who demonstrate exemplary leadership within the college, its student body, and community, which align with the college’s values. The award also celebrates recipients for their impact on others in the world around them while also honoring former Governor Robert W. Scott. Recipients must also be in good academic standing.
“In the game of life, the greatest opponent we face often is ourselves; yet it’s overcoming our own doubts and limitations that we discover our true strength and potential,” said Sherrill about his mindset on receiving this award.
Sherrill graduated from SCC on May 11, 2024, with an Associate in Arts. Sherrill will transfer to Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute in the fall.
