    The First Baptist Church of Albemarle was organized in April 1888. Rev. J.M. Bennett served as the first pastor and there were seven charter members. The church soon purchased land at the corner of Third and North streets from Syd Austin. In late August 1891, construction on their first building, shown in today’s picture, was begun by local contractor Locke Moody. By the end of 1893, the church had grown to 26 members and soon the first resident pastor was hired. Due to the church’s growth, a baptistry was added to the back of the church, and in 1895 a parsonage was purchased in East Albemarle. By 1897, the church had grown to 100 members and by 1901, over 200. During the next 10 years, church members periodically discussed the need for a new church building. Plans were finally given out in March 1914 and the cornerstone of the new building was laid on Aug. 28, 1916. The opening service of the new building was held on Nov. 24, 1918. {Lewis Bramlett – Stanly County Historical Society}
