Three students from Surry Community College have been selected to travel to Bordeaux, France, this month as part of a group of 20 students from community colleges across North Carolina.
The students were chosen through an initial application and follow-up interview. They also participated in a Cultural Studies course before the trip.
The three students will travel to Bordeaux, France, a city known for its ancient history, vineyards, chateaus, and wine. The trip will provide the students with virtual exchange meetings with French students, prior to the trip, basic French language skills, and a wholly unique and immersive experience with French culture.
Sydney Tucker is in her second year at the community college to complete an associate in arts degree, and she is also a student selected to travel to Bordeaux, France. The Pilot Mountain native enjoys reading, photography, and hanging out with friends.
“I hope to learn how to travel abroad, see how the college experience is for students in France, and come home changed from my experiences abroad for the better. I also will be eager to share what I will have learned from the trip,” said Tucker about her upcoming trip.
Paulina Cruz-Martinez, a Yadkin Early College super senior, is one of the students selected to travel to Bordeaux, France. Cruz-Martinez is completing an associate in arts at SCC.
The Jonesville native fills her free time listening to podcasts, dancing, and learning about other cultures. Cruz-Martinez will be attending the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in the fall to study Business Administration.
About the trip, Cruz-Martinez said, “I’m excited to travel. It’s cool to see how other people live and the places they see every day. I’m also excited to try authentic French dishes, snacks, and desserts. I’d love to make new friends and meet new people as well.”
Daisy Jimenez, a Yadkin Early College super senior, is completing an associate in arts at SCC, and she was also selected to travel to Bordeaux, France. Jimenez spends her free time listening to podcasts, baking, and exploring cuisines from around the world.
In the fall, Jimenez will be attending North Carolina State University to major in Criminology.
In anticipation of her trip, Jimenez said, “I am excited to travel abroad. I am interested in learning about their architecture, parks, and trying the local cuisine.”
The trip fees amount to approximately $2,500, and Surry Community College will provide a $1,000 scholarship for each student.
Tucker, Jimenez, and Cruz-Martinez are members of the Scholars of Global Distinction program at SCC. The Scholars of Global Distinction program is a partnership between community colleges throughout North Carolina and the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill’s World View program. The program is designed to help students become more culturally and globally educated.
“The SCC Global Scholars program helps students think about the bigger, broader world outside of Surry County and Yadkin County and learn about the diverse cultures the world possesses. We are always excited when our students can travel and learn about a place they’ve only previously seen online. The three students who were selected to go to France will represent us well, and we look forward to learning more from them when they return,” said Emily Workman, communication instructor at SCC.
