Tuesday’s Five Facts

[1] Increased containment in Ruidoso fires – Weekend moisture helped crews fight the wildfires in Ruidoso. As of Monday both the South Fork and Salt fires are 84% contained. Combined, the two fires have burned more than 25,000 acres. Crews are nearly done with structure assessment and are focusing on flood mitigation.

[2] New laws going into effect in New Mexico – Laws that were passed during the state’s most recent legislative session are now in effect. One of the biggest laws allows retired police officers and public safety workers to return to work without being forced to give up their pensions. Another law requires a yearly study to examine suicide prevention among veterans. Lawmakers are scheduled to meet later this month to have a special lawmaking session to try to address crime and justice in the state.

[3] Less widespread rain but muggy weather – Storms will likely begin later this morning in and around The Lincoln National Forest, as well the northeastern and southwestern hilly communities of the viewing area. Most areas will reach the upper 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and low triple digits. The main threats with the slow-moving storms to start will be flash flooding, especially in the burn-scar areas.

[4] City of Albuquerque prepares for Freedom Fourth celebrations – Albuquerque Fire Rescue is adding six additional wildland crews on the 3rd and 4th in an effort to make sure the holiday is celebrated safely. Officials are encouraging people to watch the fireworks celebration and not do illegal firework and report illegal fireworks by calling 311. Albuquerque is in stage one fire restrictions, meaning there is his risk for human started fires.

[5] Albuquerque woman crowned as Miss New Mexico – Mackenzie Sydow is the newly crowned Miss New Mexico. In 2019 Sydow became the full time caregiver of her brother Michael, who has autism, after both of their parents passed away unexpectedly. Monday, Sydow was crowned as Miss new Mexico and will go on to represent the state in the Miss U.S.A. pageant.
