ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The city has taken another step towards its climate goals. By adding five new electric vans, ABQ Ride is trying to get to zero emissions by 2040.

“We continue to move the needle forward to zero emissions by 2040,” Mayor Tim Keller said in a press release. “This program is taking transit to the next level of sustainability, and the electric vans will literally meet you at your doorstep to take you where you need to go.”

The new vans are Ford E-Transit vans, with seven-person seating. They also include wheelchair accessibility and will provide transportation options beyond the usual city bus routes.

“The ABQ RIDE Connect microtransit pilot program represents a customized transit solution essential for enhancing accessibility alongside our fixed-route bus system,” City Councilor Tammy Fiebelkorn said in a press release. “The introduction of electric vans further enhances this initiative. It marks a significant stride towards achieving our climate objectives by reducing vehicle usage and ensuring zero emissions from these new transit vehicles.”

The microtransit program began in March . To access the program, riders use the ABQ RIDE Connect app (available on the Apple store or Google Play store) to call for a ride. For now, the pilot program serves areas in the southwest mesa (between Central Avenue and Dennis Chaves Boulevard) and the Rio Grande area (between Montaño Road and Central Avenue).
