ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Lobo football team wrapped up its first official week of training camp on Saturday. It is the first camp for UNM under Head Coach Bronco Mendenhall, and even though he has instilled his culture over the months since his hire, players are feeling the difference in coaching.

“I see a real culture change now,” said running back Andrew Henry. “Well, I’d say a buy-in by players instead of a forced by coaches, which is different. Like, you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink it. I feel like now, we are all thirsty, you know we are all thirsty, so it’s a little different.”

Henry is one of a handful of returning players expecting to start in 2024. He struggled to stay healthy in 2023 but made the most of his opportunities when he saw the field including 390 total yards and three touchdowns. Now, with the coaching of Mendenhall, Henry believes his game has elevated to new heights.

“He has exposed that I had weak areas in my mind, but after this first week of camp, I don’t think that it’s there anymore. When he first got here, he pointed out a lot of flaws that we had, and he just got here and put a mirror in front of us, and we saw it, and it was either change what you see in the mirror or leave.”

While Henry is the penciled-in starter in the backfield, competition for the spot will be fierce. Running back is possibly the deepest position group on the team, which makes Henry believe this offense is capable of putting up some historic numbers.

“Top two in the country in offense, and we are not going to be two.”
