ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Among the local participants in this year’s Home Run Derby X includes current UNM Lobo and former St. Pius Sartan, Gene Trujillo. Known for his power hitting ability, Trujillo is excited to participate in the event in his hometown and feels like he actually has an upper hand against the competition as this will be his third-ever derby participation.

“I think I hit like 34 homeruns or something, and I know how to do it because in my first one I remember I just jumped right away, and I was just trying to hit the ball as hard and as far as I can, when there is actually a skill to be in the home run derby,” he said.

After hitting four homers with a .304 average in his senior season with the Lobos, Trujillo feels like he has actually elevated his game over the last few months. He played in the Northwoods Collegiate Summer League and credits the level of competition for evolving his game.

“I got to see a lot of really good pitching. I grew as a baseball player too. Physically, I got stronger, but mentally, I took a leap. I learned the game in a different way, and I got to learn it from a bunch of really good players, and yeah, it was just a really good summer.”
