ALCOA, Tenn. (WATE) — Alcoa police identified and arrested seven people during a prostitution sting over the weekend.

In a release shared on Tuesday, Alcoa Police stated that its Criminal Investigations Section conducted the sting on July 19 and 20.

During that operation, officers and detectives identified nine people “engaging in prostitution,” two of which were identified as human trafficking victims, Alcoa Police said.

The department shared that seven people were arrested. APD did not identify those charged or share what charges they are facing in the release.

“It’s a myth that prostitution is a victimless crime, and this operation is proof of that because we identified two individuals as victims of human trafficking. Those that are victims of human trafficking, we are here for you. We want to ensure your safety and assist you in safely getting help,” Alcoa Police Chief David Carswell said.

According to the TBI, human trafficking is the second-fastest growing criminal industry, just behind drug trafficking. If you or someone you know is a victim of human trafficking, call the TBI’s Human Trafficking Hotline at 1(855) 558-6484 or visit the TBI’s website for resources.
