Laredo, East LA and Hialeah, among the Latino-heavy cities with the highest poverty rates in the U.S.
A new study of the ten census-designated cities with 100,000 or more residents and high Latino populations showed their poverty rates are 50% higher than the national average. The ten communities, which include Laredo, Texas; East LA and Hialeah, Florida had an average poverty rate of 18.7%, considerably higher than the national poverty rate of 12.5% and the overall Latino poverty rate of 17.2%, the report by Axios shows.
Remembering Elisabeth Brown, a visionary in Orange County land conservation
Elisabeth ‘Liz’ Brown, biologist and inspirational Orange County advocate for open space and wildlife habitat protection, died peacefully on July 6 at the age of 81. A beloved figure in the Southern California environmental community, she served as president of Laguna Greenbelt, Inc. from 1985 to 2019. During that time, she played invaluable roles in collaborative efforts and legal battles protecting wilderness around Laguna Beach, establishing organizations to manage those lands, and creating programs for public access.
CalOptima is working to prevent Fentanyl overdoses
ORANGE, Calif. (July 22, 2024) — To combat the growing fentanyl epidemic, CalOptima Health recently distributed more than 16,000 free doses of naloxone during an event in Orange where representatives from doctor offices, hospitals and community organizations attended. The participants picked up the medication in cases and committed to speeding the life-saving medication into the hands of CalOptima Health members as a tool to prevent accidental opioid overdoses.
