The weekly Jazz First podcast series "They Call It Jazz" with 1-hour of brand new releases. Acid Jazz pioneer Galliano is our featured artist. They're back with a new album Halfway Somewhere after not being in a recording studio for three decades. 'Jazz' is the featured track, a remake from the version recorded on A Joyous Noise Unto The Creator released in 1992. I can still remember the impression that Ralph Bowen made on a young jazz enthusiast trying to break into radio and be part of the hip jazz crowd. I had decided to get involved with the programming end of a local non-profit arts support organization and on a letter perfect July evening our committee had lined up a double bill that included Kevin Eubanks and the mid '80s collective Out Of The Blue. An hour or so before OTB was set to open the evening's festivities I was helping out backstage when the guys from the band began to gather. Bowen had found a private little spot in some corner and was blowing some of the gutsiest tenor saxophone that I can recall hearing up to that point. It struck a chord and in addition to eventually picking up all of the OTB albums that Blue Note released, I made a point of keeping and eye and ear open for anything else that Bowen might be involved in.

There are certain instruments that struggled for attention in the years when the jazz ecology was an overwhelmingly male preserve—or rather, when many men perceived jazz to be a male preserve, and a heterosexual, alpha male one at that. Exhibit A, the flute, was described by one leading male alto saxophonist, a near contemporary of Charlie Parker who passed in the 2010s, as "a faggot instrument." He was not alone in his opinion. Exhibit B, the harp, was, and continues to be, ignored by male musicians even more comprehensively than the flute ever was. All jazz harpists of note have been women and their work has, generally speaking, been sidelined rather than celebrated.
