Superintendent rated ‘highly effective’ after bringing changes to Kalamazoo schools
KALAMAZOO, MI -- Kalamazoo Public Schools Superintendent Darrin Slade was rated “highly effective” by the school board in his first evaluation, this week. The board announced the evaluation after a closed session on Wednesday, June 26. The board voted unanimously for the rating and there were no adjustments made to Slade’s contract at the meeting. Slade is on a three-year contract with the district with a $230,000 annual salary.
WMU approves largest tuition increase since 2008
KALAMAZOO, MI -- Western Michigan University’s Board of Trustees hiked tuition to $15,252 starting in fall 2024, at its Thursday, June 27 board meeting. Tuition for a resident first-year undergraduate student is increasing by 4.5%, $658 more than fall 2023. The dollar increase is the university’s largest since 2008-09. That year, the university approved a 9.2% increase which, at the time, equated to a $668 jump.

BoT raises tuition and room and board rates for 2024-25 academic year
Western Michigan University’s Board of Trustees (BoT) met June 27 to discuss tuition rates, room, board and apartment rates and general budgets for the 2024-25 school year. A motion was proposed to increase student room, board and apartment rates for the school year. This motion suggested a 5% increase to student room and board rates, a 3% increase for Stadium Drive Apartments and Spindler Hall and a 4% increase for Western View and Arcadia Flats.
