Law school grads could earn license through work rather than bar exam in some states
PORTLAND, Ore. — Before Bailey McQueeny-Rose attended law school at the University of Oregon, she worked in reproductive health care, first as a medical assistant and then as a trainer, teaching others to do the same job. The work opened her eyes to how access to health care differed based on the laws in the […]
Riot, laugh and cry: The evolution of Sleater-Kinney, which opens PDX Live series Aug. 7
A great many people laughed at the satire — and reality — of the series “Portlandia,” starring Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen. Count Corin Tucker among them. As Brownstein’s bandmate in one of the Pacific Northwest’s preeminent bands, Sleater-Kinney, Tucker had first-hand knowledge of how her friend and fellow musician had other talents outside of shredding on guitar and singing. And, it was exposed in the series from 2011-18. “Oh...

At noon on Sunday, July 14, the Reed Neighborhood Association’s annual Block Party took place in the shade of large trees on S.E. Raymond Street, just west of 34th Avenue. There wasn’t any formal program or specific activities, just neighbors getting together over a potluck luncheon. “This is, by far our neighborhood’s biggest event every year – highlighted by everyone bringing fantastic food to share,” exclaimed Reed Neighborhood Association President Kristina DiTullo. ...

A new 206-unit “affordable housing” apartment complex has opened in the Creston-Kenilworth neighborhood – it’s across from the Cleveland High School athletic field. Low-income Portlanders started moving into the Hazel Ying Lee Apartments in mid-July. “It’s really going to be just a true community of folk of all ages, varying backgrounds or in various stages of their housing journey,” Home Forward CEO Ivory Mathews said. “I consider this a model project for what these partnerships can mean, and have meant, for our community.” ...
Rose Festival ends with splashes in Westmoreland Park
On the sunny Sunday of June 23, long before the announced noon starting time – a crowd was already gathering on the perimeter of the historic Westmoreland Park Casting Pond, for the Royal Rosarians’ Milk Carton Boat Races – which, for decades, have been the final event in each year’s Portland Rose Festival. Before the first race, prime event sponsor Alpenrose Dairy had already given away cases of icy-cold lunch-size cartons of milk to eager race fans. ...
Completion of Errol Heights Park, and new paved streets, celebrated
Brentwood-Darlington neighbors were again invited to Errol Heights Park for the formal celebration of its completion – June 1. The announcement from the Portland Bureau of Transportation’s Errol Heights Street Improvement Project Team came as they were also celebrating paving about 1.2 miles of unimproved streets in the area, and putting in stormwater management facilities. As previously covered in THE BEE half a year ago – complete with video! –...
Ribbon cutting opens big new Holgate Library
At a celebration on Saturday morning, July 13th, attended by some 150 people, the totally-rebuilt Holgate Library once again opened its doors to the public. As reported previously in THE BEE, the past incarnation of the single-story Holgate Library wasn’t just remodeled – it was entirely demolished and rebuilt from the ground up, as a two-story, ultramodern, 21,000 square foot structure. The rebuilding was completed on schedule, in about 18 months – a remarkable achievement in and of itself. ...
‘SMILE Summer Music Series’ starts with mellow blues duo
The 2024 “SMILE Summer Music Series” of free Saturday evening concerts through August got underway on July 13, with Westmoreland’s Windermere Building providing shade for the concert-goers who came to hear the JT Wise Band. What they got instead was at a slightly lower energy level than they were expecting; SMILE Board Member Jim Friscia, who headed the committee arranging these free summer concerts, explained that that band had to cancel at the last minute due to illness, and stepping in instead was the duo...
Foster-Powell ‘Summer Soirée’ returns to Laurelwood Park
The Saturday afternoon of June 22nd found S.E. Foster Road sidewalks filled with folks taking in this year’s “Foster Road Summer Soirée” – with the nexus being the booths set up in PP&R’s triangular Laurelwood Park at Holgate Boulevard. Even early in the afternoon, it appeared that this event – put on by the Foster Area Business Association (FABA) Neighborhood Business District – was already a success. “Beautiful weather for...
Cooling off in the Brooklyn neighborhood is downhill all the way
During Portland’s increasingly hot summers, PP&R’s splash pads have some strong competition from the water slide set up on the hill in Brooklyn Park, two blocks south of Powell on S.E. Milwaukie Avenue. On really hot days, kids arrive from all over the area to enjoy it – and even some adults join the line at the top of the hill to await a turn down the slippery slope provided by hose water and a large plastic sheet.

A look at the new ‘Meals on Wheels’ center on SE 82nd
The building which, decades ago, housed a carwash, and then for decades was a “Color Tile” store – across from Eastport Plaza, at 4035 S.E. 82nd Avenue of Roses – is now well on its way to becoming the new “Meals on Wheels People Eastside Center”. This new center is also now connected to a warehouse-like structure directly to the north of it, which was once the Gary’s Organ Center store. ...
Counterintuitive? Shooting stats are improving, says PPB
On Thursday, June 27, shots were fired at the intersection at S.E. 82nd Avenue of Roses and Knight Street – and a man fell, dead, to the pavement. Portland Police Bureau (PPB) East Precinct officers were dispatched at 11:44 p.m. to a “Disturbance” – which soon was revised to being a fatal shooting, when arriving officers found the victim in the street. The PPB’s Homicide Division detectives responded to investigate...
Why trees fell in January ice storm; steps to take before this winter begins
With a hot summer very definitely upon us, and the potential of another cold winter with more extreme weather possible, it’s not too early to start thinking about what you might want to do to try to prevent tree damage similar to last January’s in the winter ahead. Southeast Portland area residents were shocked by the large number of big trees that fell during the ten-day arctic storm that first struck on late Friday evening, this past January 12th. Well over 1,000 trees fell in...
Parked BMW burns in Sellwood; cause under investigation
An older BMW two-door sedan erupting in flames near the intersection of S.E. Clatsop Street and 13th Avenue caught the attention of a BEE reader with a camera on Wednesday afternoon, July 3rd. But apparently no one in the vicinity saw how the fire started. Westmoreland Fire Station 20’s Engine Company was sent to the blaze at 4:28 p.m. As they rolled up, a crew member radioed to dispatchers, “We’re coming up to a car that is fully involved with fire.” ...

The Volkswagen was stolen in the early morning of Tuesday, July 16, from the owner’s driveway in Wilsonville, and was reported to Wilsonville Police. East Precinct officers utilized LoJack tracking capability, and located the stolen...

Classic vehicles were staging along S.E. Reed College Place near Duniway School; participants were flocking into the neighborhood, and observers were reserving their places in the shade of the boulevard’s Linden Allée. Having arrived early, Jerry and Gretchen Eichentopf and their extended family and crew...
ODOT issues wildfire travel advisory
After a week of wildfire-related road closures, travelers across Oregon should continue to carefully plan their routes, according to an advisory from the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). "Fires are still actively burning near many highways, causing them to close and reopen with little notice," the ODOT advisory states. "With a long, hot summer ahead, wildfire-related disruptions are likely to continue throughout the state making some routes unreliable." For those...
Be ready for potential power outages, PUC says
As wildfires continue to burn throughout the state and extreme weather events impact communities, Oregon residents are encouraged to be prepared for potential power outages. "Wildfires and extreme weather can cause power outages, and weather and other conditions in specific geographies may cause electric utilities to adjust system settings, which can result in more frequent and longer outages, or even in certain cases, implement public safety power shutoffs (PSPS," the Oregon Public Utility Commission (PUC) states in a release. ...
