Opinion: Moneta Rescue Squad First Lieutenant voices concern about lack of funding for volunteer rescue squads
Recently, the Bedford County Board of Supervisors met to approve the 2024-2025 budget. One item in the budget increased the funding levels for all the volunteer fire departments in Bedford County. Their [volunteer fire departments] rate for responding to a call increased substantially to $135 a call. While I applaud this needed increase for a very worthy cause, it is frustrating and disappointing to see that no similar funding (nor any increase period for at least 10 years) was approved for the volunteer rescue squads. Perhaps the supervisors are unaware of the benefit that the volunteer rescue squads bring to the community and significantly, the taxpayers.
