The city of Altoona is getting rid of a roundabout.

Crews began working Monday to remove the roundabout at the intersection of 10th Avenue Southeast and 15th Street Southeast, according to a news release. The small roundabout is in a residential neighborhood near Falcon Ridge Park.

The roundabout is in need of repairs, and the city will instead replace it with a four-way stop to improve ease of traffic for vehicles and at the request of residents, the release says.

"This small roundabout is being removed because it was needing repair often and was difficult for larger vehicles to navigate," the city said in a Facebook thread about the project. "Other roundabouts around the city are larger in size, and don't experience the level of repairs, or issues with navigating, that this roundabout saw. Roundabouts in general are often incorporated at intersections because they permit traffic to flow more seamlessly."

Crews will work to maintain one lane of traffic to keep the intersection open during the project, which is expected to take several weeks, weather permitting. There may be traffic delays during construction.
