The Nov. 6, 1978, edition of the Register’s sister afternoon paper, the Des Moines Tribune, reports on the Nov. 5 fire in the Younkers store at Merle Hay Mall, which kills 10 employees. The fire was the deadliest in Des Moines history. It started in a leaky heating and cooling system before the store opened that Sunday. Relatives of the victims later sue the city for failing to enforce numerous fire and building codes.
