ALTOONA, Pa. (WTAJ) – HoopsFest returns for its 22nd year with basketball fans from Pa. and 12 other states attending to join in on the fun.

For some, it was their first time. For others, it has become a yearly tradition.

“It’s like a family reunion,” Jim Kilmartin, organizer of HoopsFest, said. “We just absolutely love it.”

Division Head Drew Shubik said the event has only “grown exponentially” since its inception. With more players joining in every year, that means more money going towards HoopsFest main investment: local parks. This year, the money will be spent on restoring Focus Park in Altoona.

The event can spark an interest in basketball for the younger generation, something not lost on the older players.

“I think we have a lot of young basketball players that could do really well in the future,” Jimmy Colombo, a player and local resident, said.

As for the future, Kilmartin said he wants to see even more teams next year, potentially even breaking the 300 mark.
