Today, we’re thrilled to have independent music titans EMPIRE on Bandcamp. The names on their roster include everyone from underground kings like Westside Gunn and The Alchemist to established names like Anderson Paak and newly-minted country chart-topper Shaboozey—who’s groundbreaking single “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” has dominated the summer.

Claudius Loik would like you to know his label, Froh und Munter Records, is fake. “I was a guy with a very small audience who wanted to get rid of his own stuff,” he says, referring to the dozens of releases he recorded under the experimental ambient pop outfit The John Doe Experience, the ‘80s-inspired synthwave project Loik, and Diametral, the punk band turned solo project he started at age 16. Starting the label was just an elaborate ploy to look official. “I never thought about real label work. I only ever wanted to have it as a platform for my own stuff, for my own musical projects.”

Matter might be their first release, but each member of the quartet is well-seasoned in the machinations of music making: Between them they’ve played in Bloc Party, Blue Ruth, Cassels, Youth Man, and Frauds. Based on that, you might think you have an inkling as to what they sound like. You’d be wrong.
