The Hamptons has long been a symbol of upscale summer escapades. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, its nightlife reached a pinnacle of glamour and exclusivity, drawing celebrities, socialites, and the wealthy to the glittering shores of the East End. This golden era transformed the tranquil beach towns into pulsating hubs of after-dark excitement.

The July issue of Northforker is here, and it’s simply the best
Orient’s fireworks show in 2019. (Credit: Jeremy Garretson) Any time I’ve been asked that question about anything, I end up rattling off four or five favorites of any given thing — restaurants, places to visit, shops — because I can rarely just pick one. That was certainly a concern when tasked with building our annual Best of the North Fork list this year. We live in a community that is bursting with creative, brilliant and unique things to do, restaurants to try, wines to taste…the list goes on. But thanks to a great collaborative effort between the Northforker team, I think this year’s list represents a large swath of the community’s picks.
Proposed ban on short-term rentals shakes up tourist town
In the global cat-and-mouse game of regulating home sharing, one North Fork village has a new way of toying with its prey. Greenport, a former whaling town that has become a popular weekend destination for New Yorkers, already has a 14-day minimum for rentals. But its code committee now wants to make it 30 days, and to close loopholes that have allowed owners who occupy their homes while renting rooms to host for as little as a weekend.
The developer determined to build affordable in Sag Harbor
At a special meeting in June of the Village of Sag Harbor’s planning board, a local detailed his opposition to Adam Potter’s planned mixed- use development with an affordable housing component. It wasn’t that the community didn’t like Potter, the speaker said. They just didn’t know him enough....

Culture Club: Dances in Mitchell Park, Greenport
There’s something magical about an outdoor summer concert in Greenport. Maybe it’s being cooled off by a summer breeze when your feet can’t stop moving to the beat, or the feeling of just sitting on a blanket, taking in the tune and seeing the sun set in the distance. Maybe it’s that communal spirit of friends and neighbors coming together to enjoy a good show. One thing is certain — if it’s a Monday night in Mitchell Park, it’s going to be special.
New MTK Artwork at the Montauk Chamber of Commerce
Each year, the Montauk Chamber of Commerce holds a contest for artist whose designs will be considered to be painted on the large MTK which sits in front of the Chamber building in town. Sarah Schreck saw the contest on Instagram and decided to submit an entry. Fortunately for us she did, and won. Now we have another lovely piece of art to enjoy while strolling through town. Sarah is a full-time graphic designer, yoga teacher, and a playwright! Growing up in Florida, she moved to Pittsburgh to pursue a master’s degree in arts management, and now lives in New Haven with her partner Jack.
