AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – The Texas Wounded Warrior Foundation is set to host its annual Amarillo golf tournament on Monday, today they had a competition for their warriors.

The foundation is hosting its 9th annual golf event at the Tascosa Golf Club, located at 4502 Fairway Drive, on July 1.

“We have 64 warriors in Amarillo right now, they had a two-man scramble today an opportunity for them to get together and meet one another and meet new people and fellowship,” said Texas Wounded Warrior Foundation member Scotty Knutson. “And just have a great day part of the weekend that we have planned for them.”

Knutson explained how having this outlet can help veterans in their day to day life.

“I think the mental deal helps them through some of the trauma that they’ve been through, and doing things basically none of us really wanted to sign up and do and so I think it brings them together with different warriors that they don’t know,” said Knutson. “And long life, lasting friendships are made.”

During these events, many stories are told by veterans. For example a story about a pilot who went on a training mission and the aircraft crashed, resulting in his crew tragically dying.

“It almost cost him his marriage, until one day, his wife said, you’ve got to get some help, or I’m I can’t do this. And he got involved in the Wounded Warrior and he started playing golf, and he realized that he had some problems,” said Knutson. “Started seeking some counseling. And I think that’s just the outreach of the Wounded Warrior program here in the state of Texas that just to help these guys overcome some of that stuff.”

Texas Wounded Warrior Foundation Founder Dick Gotez said that this organization began to help veterans connect with veterans and it has created so much more.

“Not only the camaraderie among the warriors when they get here, but there is a there’s a wonderful healing process that takes place that a lot of people won’t see these warriors kind of have a language of their own, and so they talk to one another,” said Gotez.

Dominic Stam is a veteran who recently found out about the organization, explains his view on veterans who join the program.

“They’re all kind of unique stories, but all are similar at the same time and everybody’s kind of path and getting into golf is all the same type of thing. We’re all here for the same purpose,” said Stam.
