AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — The Texas Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced a campaign collaboration to raise awareness about the dangers of speeding in Amarillo. NHTSA will host an event at Cadillac Ranch on Thursday at 8 a.m.

According to TxDOT officials, in 2023, there were 2,193 traffic crashes in the Texas Panhandle due to speeding. The crashes resulted in 24 deaths, while the state reported 1,456 people killed.

On average, officials noted that 1 in 3 of all traffic fatalities in Texas is the result of speeding, making it the number one contributing factor.

“In urging drivers to slow down and drive the speed limit, local law enforcement will step up enforcement of speeding laws and let drivers know to slow down or pay up,” said TxDOT officials.

TxDOT officials also noted that NHTSA has events scheduled through the end of July, including eight stops along Route 66.
