The good times never felt so good for Metallica’s Boston-area fans at the band’s concert at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on Sunday, August 4. During the show, Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo and guitarist Kirk Hammett had some fun with the crowd, as the rockers treated them to a tongue-in-cheek rendition of Neil Diamond’s classic sing-along hit “Sweet Caroline.”

“Sweet Caroline,” of course, famously has been sung for years by fans at Boston Red Sox games at Fenway Park.

Metallica’s performance of Diamond’s 1969 smash came about six songs into the concert, after the band had played a version of “Screaming Suicide,” a tune from their 2023 album 72 Seasons.

fan-shot video, frontman James Hetfield told the crowd that Trujillo and Hammett were “gonna entertain you for a moment.” He added, “Have fun.”

Trujillo then announced, “At this point in the show, Kirk and I like to have a jam. So this song is really scary, super heavy, and if you start moshing, try not to injure yourself, ’cause it is such a scary song, I’m already shaking.”

Trujillo proceeded to sing Diamond’s pop gem in a gruff voice, getting the audience to join in with him during the choruses. Hammett added some metal riffs to his generally faithful rendition of the tune. At the end of the performance, Trujillo declared, “Thank you very much! The heaviest song in the world!”

Hammett then threw out a riff from The Standells’ Boston-themed 1966 garage-rock classic “Dirty Water.”

About Trujillo and Hammett’s Bass-and-Guitar “Doodles”

Trujillo and Hammett regularly play bass-and-guitar “doodles” during Metallica concerts. These interludes sometimes feature the two musicians playing songs that have a connection to the local city or area where the band is playing that night.

For example, the duo performed Kansas’ “Carry On Wayward Son” at a 2019 show in Wichita, Kansas.

    Metallica’s 2024 Tour Plans

Metallica began the current North American leg of its M72 World Tour with August 2 and 4 shows in Foxborough. The band’s next concert takes place August 9 at Soldier Field in Chicago. The trek is mapped out through a September 29 show in Mexico City.

Metallica also will be performing at the 2024 edition of its Helping Hands benefit concert and auction. The event, which raises money for the band’s All Within My Hands Foundation, is scheduled for December 13 at YouTube Theater in Los Angeles.

Tickets for Metallica’s concerts are available now via a variety of outlets, including StubHub.
