Vince Gill is easily one of the best songwriters of his generation. He has penned quite a few love songs through the years, but only one song has been confirmed to be about Vince Gill’s wife, fellow singer/songwriter Amy Grant. That particular song would be the 1994 ballad “Whenever You Come Around” from Gill’s album When Love Finds You.
“Whenever You Come Around” was actually written about Amy Grant before the two singer/songwriters even started dating. And according to Gill, he pitched the song to her while they were working together platonically; and she seemed impressed, though oblivious to the fact that she inspired the ballad.

The Story Behind Vince Gill’s “Whenever You Come Around”
Gill said during a 2016 event that he was smitten by how beautiful Grant was as well as her smile, which prompted him to write the song. Shortly after penning the song about his future wife, Vince Gill found himself co-writing music with her. Grant asked him to play some music from his upcoming record at the time, so he played “Whenever You Come Around”. Obviously, he didn’t mention that it was about her.
“She listened to it and said, ‘Oh that’s nice, that’s really beautiful,’” said Gill. “Years and years and years later, she said, ‘I remember listening to that song for the first time and all I could think was who is the lucky girl that that song was written for?’”

Not only is “Whenever You Come Around” a love song for Grant, but it’s also one of Gill’s favorite songs to date. It’s pretty obvious why the tune is so close to Gill’s heart.
“Maybe ‘Whenever You Come Around’,” Gill said in an interview with Southern Living when asked what his favorite song was to perform live. “I wrote it for Amy when I first met her. I was just taken with how pretty she was and the smile she had. It’s just a song of yearning and hope. Beautiful song. She inspired it.”

Grant and Gill initially met when they were both married to other spouses. Eventually, though, they went through their respective divorces and then reconnected. The pair married in 2000, and “Whenever You Come Around” is still one of Gill’s very best love songs.
