Back in February 2024, country music lost a legend when Toby Keith passed away at 62 years old. Having battled stomach cancer for some time, the singer continued to support country music and its artists. Throughout his time in the spotlight, Keith produced numerous iconic country songs like “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” and “How Do You Like Me Now?” Selling over 40 million albums, Keith received the National Medal of Arts and was even inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. With Brett Favre wanting to honor his friend’s legacy, it appears NBC will host a special tribute featuring more than just Favre.
On Wednesday, NBC will host the Toby Keith: American Icon special from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. Although airing for the first time, the special was recorded back in July. Showcasing his rich history in music, the special will include covers of his songs by stars like Lainey Wilson, Ashley McBryde, Jordan Davis, Eric Church, Carrie Underwood, and more.
Just last week, Favre decided to post a picture of himself with Keith on the golf course. He captioned the post, “Toby Keith was one of a kind. He worked as hard as anybody and had a great time every time we got together. You just never know when it’s your time to go. Make sure you tell your loved ones that you care about them.”

Brett Favre Talks Playing Golf With Toby Keith
Having discussed their friendship in the past, Favre once talked about playing golf with the singer. Speaking with TMZ Sports back in February, he explained how they were paired with Andy North and Jack Nicklaus for a pro-am tournament. “I couldn’t tell you if (Keith) hit a good or bad shot, but he was a lot of fun to play with. Toby was just … he was an entertainer. He was the best.”
Although taking a moment to remember Keith, Favre received a great deal of love himself from fans. “When my uncle Ollie was dying you called and talked to him about your days at Lambeau and all the fun times. His job with the Packers was his life and you made him feel so special the day before he died. Thank you for that.” And one comment included, “I’m still crying! We’re keeping his memory alive! So it is.”
For those who happen to miss the special on NBC, Toby Keith: American Icon will stream the following day on Peacock.
