Deryck Whibley of Sum 41 was geared up to make an announcement on Wednesday, August 28, according to a post on the band’s social media. The announcement coincided with the mysterious countdown clock on Linkin Park’s website, which fans speculate could be to announce a new lead vocalist. However, Whibley has since taken to social media to dispel the rumors that he would be joining Linkin Park.

“I feel the need to dispel some current rumors,” Whibley wrote on Instagram. “It’s been brought to my attention than many people think I could be joining a reuniting band. But I just want to say, despite popular belief, I am not joining Oasis…or Linkin Park. Or any other band for that matter.”

Whibley continued, “I have my own ‘tour and book’ announcement that I will now move to the end of the week, ahead of our U.S. tour. I do look forward to seeing whatever both these bands do in the future.”

Rumors Fly Concerning Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley Joining Linkin Park, Whibley Dispels Speculation

The media took the coincidence of Deryck Whibley’s announcement and Linkin Park’s countdown and ran with it. Music news outlets of every caliber were covering the potential story, but Whibley nipped the rumors in the bud. Still, he has an exciting project on the horizon. Sum 41 fans should keep an eye on the band’s social media near the end of the week.

Fans in the comments of Whibley’s post essentially back-tracked a lot of what they commented on the previous announcement post. “Well I have a lot of comments to delete,” one fan joked. Others shared their sadness that Whibley is not going to be joining Linkin Park.

“Damn. The idea of you fronting LINKIN PARK did sound badass!” one fan replied. Another clarified, “I’m pretty sure the Oasis ones were a joke, but it would’ve been cool.” Yet another fan held onto their speculation, writing, “Imagine if this is just to throw people off the scent and then the linkin park announcement comes and it turns out he is joining the band.”

Another fan shared a similar sentiment, writing, “That’s exactly what someone who is joining Linkin Park would say,” with a laughing emoji.
