If you’re a fan of classic 1960s and 1970s psychedelic rock and are struggling to get into modern-day psych-rock revival, we’ve got you covered. The following five albums are excellent records to listen to in order to get a feel for what psych-rock looks like today. Let’s explore a few psychedelic rock revival albums that are essential listening for new listeners!

    1. ‘Manipulator’ by Ty Segall

If your preferred style of psych-rock leans more toward noise, you’ll likely enjoy any of Ty Segall’s releases. This multi-instrumentalist is quite popular nowadays, and for good reason. Albums like Manipulator and his two (yes, two) self-titled albums are each unique forays into psychedelic rock that also have glam rock, garage rock, lo-fi, and punk elements.

    2. ‘Nonagon Infinity’ by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard is one of the most well-known and influential bands in the psychedelic revival movement. They’ve released over a dozen albums thus far since they formed in 2010, each of which has its own merit. However, the 2016 released Nonagon Infinity is particularly good. We’d even say it’s essential listening for anyone who wants to get into psychedelic rock revival.

    3. ‘Lonerism’ by Tame Impala

Tame Impala is another Australian band (like King Gizzard) in the psychedelic rock realm. Led by multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Kevin Parker, Tame Impala has achieved as close to mainstream success as you’d expect from a psych-rock outfit. You can really hear the 1970s inspiration in their music, particularly on the 2012 album Lonerism.

    4. ‘Ice Melt’ by Crumb

Small but mighty, Boston’s premier psychedelic rock band Crumb is audibly influenced by other genres, including jazz, blues, and more. Lila Ramani is the songwriter of the band, and her arrangements are some of the most unique in the psych-rock revival movement. Ice Melt is essential listening, as is their newest release Amama.

    5. ‘South Of Reality’ by The Claypool Lennon Delirium

Did you know that Primus’ frontman Les Claypool and Sean Lennon (son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono) have a band together? The two musicians formed the outfit The Claypool Lennon Delirium years ago with two studio albums released thus far and one on the way. We prefer South Of Reality, but Monolith Of Phobos is great as well.
