As the world prepares for the long-awaited return of Oasis, fellow 1990s records Weezer have joined in on the conversation, welcoming Oasis back with a perfectly tongue-in-cheek cover video. Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo has long been a fan of the Britpop giants, and even through his deadpan social media delivery, his excitement was clear.
After all, who isn’t at least a little excited to see Noel and Liam Gallagher return to the stage—even if it’s a bit of morbid curiosity? Anyway, here’s what Weezer had to say about it.
Weezer Welcomes Back Oasis
Following Oasis’ reunion tour announcement, Weezer shared a screenshot of a short and sweet conversation between Oasis singer Liam Gallagher and a fan. “Do you like Weezer?” The fan account asked, to which Gallagher responded, “Yeah.” Weezer matched Gallagher’s energy with their screenshot caption: “Welcome back Oasis, we like you too.”
The “Say It Ain’t So” band added another tweet, writing, “Anyway, here’s Wonderwall,” with a short clip of Rivers Cuomo performing Oasis’ 1995 smash hit. Some X users lamented the song choice; others praised Cuomo’s version. Given what Gallagher has said about Cuomo in the past, it’s probably safe to assume he didn’t mind, either.
While speaking to Risky Fuel in 2017, Gallagher said he enjoyed Weezer. “They’re one of those bands you see on TV and go, ‘I just like ‘em. I think they’re pretty alright.’” The frontman described Cuomo as a “very strange man, him. He’s my new favorite rock star. He freaked me out. He’s just the total opposite to me, man. He’s just very timid…like Yoda or something. But I respect that.”
The Inspiration Behind Goat Punishment
Weezer covering Oasis might be a novel treat for lovers of 1990s rock, but it’s nothing new for Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo. He started learning the Oasis catalog back in the 1990s, shortly after Weezer’s sophomore release, Pinkerton. “We did a whole set of Oasis covers under the pseudonym Goat Punishment [in 1998],” Cuomo told NME in 2024.
“It was a real education because it was on the heels of Pinkerton, which is a very tortured, personal, confessional, and musically progressive album,” Cuomo continued. “Then, I got interested in Oasis because they’re the opposite of that. They’re very broad, universal lyrics, and simple songs with chords that anyone could play. I wanted to really get inside their way of doing things, so we learned a bunch of their songs and played a show.”
Back when Liam Gallagher talked about Weezer to Risky Fuel, he called Rivers Cuomo “a top man. There’s totally a place for him. He’s like the Andy Warhol of f***ing music, that’s what I think.” As speculation begins to brew about who will accompany Oasis on their “Oasis Live ‘25” tour, perhaps that “place for him” could be on stage with the Gallaghers?
Of course, only time will tell. But for fans of 1990s pop-rock, isn’t imagining Weezer and Oasis joining forces a nice thought?
