Sargent Cedric Smith was promoted to lieutenant on August 1rst. When asked what led him to become a police officer, Smith told how his uncle had been an officer. “He convinced me to give it a try.”

He told how the most exciting part was being able to help people. Smith detailed one of his first cases. “I went to like a domestic call. The guy in reference to that call took all the Christmas gifts and stuff away from these kids and their mom. . .it was like the day before Christmas.” Smith told how he was able to coordinate with people from the 911 center and others to get together Christmas presents for the family. “To this day, that been one of the most highlighted things of my career.”

Smith also told what it was like to receive the promotion, saying he had worked hard for it throughout his career and was excited to be selected for the position. “See, the majority of my career has been in investigations. Out of the eighteen years, sixteen of the years have been in investigations.” He told how he had learned about crime scene investigations, interviewing, and interrogating.

In addition to his practical experience, Smith detailed training. “Been to a lot of trainings, specialized training, was able to get degrees while I was here. Recently got my bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership, and also received my master’s in criminal justice.”

When asked what he would say to someone considering becoming a police officer, he replied. “It can be a rewarding job, a career. Going out and helping people.”

He talked about how helping others was his principle motivation. “That’s what always motivated me, being able to solve a case, being able to help a family out from whatever it may be, a burglary, helping them get some of their property back.”

When asked if a case stuck out, he mentioned one involving former Americus Times-Recorder employee Tracy Hall. “She was involved in an incident. A robbery. Some guys approached her on her front porch, and we [were] able to work that case and solve it.”

He talked about what made it satisfying. “I just remember just putting in all that legwork and time to figure out who these suspects [were] and to at the end of the day, make an arrest and put a close to that case.”

When asked how he would describe an average day, he replied; “paper work and talking to people. That’s [the] majority of the process of being an investigator, cause you got to talk to a lot of people, you [are] interviewing a lot of people, basically to gather information.”
