Bonita Hightower, author of Believe, recently gave an interview about her book. She talked about how she was inspired. “I knew I needed to write a book. I’ve been needing to do it for a long time. Just something that just kept stirring into my heart to do it.”

Hightower talked about how she finally gave herself a deadline. She told how she began by journaling pieces of the book into her phone while working at her restaurant in Plains, Bonita’s Restaurant. “Believe it or not, all the pieces came together, someone to publish it for me. It was all a one-shot deal.”

She talked about the importance of the title and central theme of the book to her life. “Belief is that foundation, whether it be right or wrong, good or bad, or whatever, it’s all based on how you believe.”

For Hightower, belief is necessary to discover purpose. “I believe that whatever you’re doing, you need to know that that is for you.”

She told how this pursuit of purpose played into her experience as a cook, leading her to places she could never anticipate. “Never thought that I would ever be in Plains, and then own property in Plains, and then serve a President of the United States and his family.”

Hightower told how she was initially unaware that she would find purpose in cooking, but she mentioned someone encouraged her to continue. “Someone told me, long time ago, just keep cooking.” Hightower told how she didn’t fully understand the advice at first. “Cooking didn’t mean that much to me, it’s just that I loved to do it.”

But Hightower continued to put the advice into action. She told how while she was in the military, she continued to practice her passion. “So everywhere I’ve gone, I’ve been cooking.” That eventually led her to open a restaurant in Plains in 2020.

Reflecting on how her passion for cooking became meaningful by faithful application, Hightower draws a connection between belief and finding one’s calling. “My belief is so strongly rooted in the fact that I must be doing what I love to do and I must be doing it where I’m supposed to be doing it until I’m released.” She gave the metaphor of a soldier on watch. “You can’t leave until your replacement comes in, or [you’re] released.”

For Hightower, this guidance comes from her Christian faith, though she did mention that the term can be controversial. She gave her own description of her faith. “I believe what I hear from within. So I’m a person that listens to the voice within, and try it out for size, and make sure it works. But my foundation is the Bible.”

Hightower also connects belief with success. “You can have what you want if you know what you want, but make sure it is according to what is already supposed to be yours.”

She also shared how reading is also an important part of success. “Reading helps you broaden your perspective, open your mind, to read is to succeed by itself.”

Hightower also shared the reason she believes she needed to write her book. “Somebody might be directed, like I was to many, many reads out there, and they might pick this up, and it might be something that is needed right then and there for their lives.”
