    Suspect police say kidnapped woman & forced her to withdraw cash from ATMs arrested in Ames

    AMES, Iowa – A Des Moines man wanted on kidnapping charges was arrested Friday night in Ames.

    Robert Gonzales, 52, is being held in the Polk County Jail. He is charged with second-degree kidnapping and first-degree burglary.

    Police say he broke into a 73-year-old woman’s home in the Easter Lake neighborhood on the evening of June 26 th . The victim told police she was restrained and then driven to ATMs in Des Moines, Altoona, Ames, and Boone where she was forced to withdraw money.

    Gonzales eventually took her back to her home and then took her car.

    Police say Gonzales had been in the woman’s home several months ago to repair an appliance.

    The woman’s vehicle was found abandoned in the Walmart parking lot on East 14th Street.

    Police arrested Gonzales on June 28th at an Ames home in the 200 block of East 9th Street after receiving tips from the community.
