    Vote: Ames Tribune Athletes of the Week for July 1-7

    Last week saw the Ames baseball team win a 1-0 thriller over Cedar Falls in eight innings on July 5 at the Ames High Baseball Field.

    The Ames softball team came up short in both games of a doubleheader at Urbandale (5-4, 7-2) on July 1 and at home against Indianola (6-4) on July 3.

    The Gilbert softball team took down Class 1A No. 10 Newman Catholic by a 4-1 score on July 5. The Ballard baseball team defeated Hampton-Dumont-CAL at home by a 4-1 score on July 3 and suffered a close 2-1 loss at 3A No. 1 North Polk on July 1 and a 5-0 setback at 3A No. 10 Pella on July 5.

    The Colo-NESCO and Collins-Maxwell baseball teams began 1A district play on July 6. Colo-NESCO scored a 3-1 victory over AGWSR and Collins-Maxwell suffered a 12-2 loss at the hands of Earlham.

    There were several standout performances from area baseball and softball players during the week.

    Clara Newton, Gilbert

    Newton had a huge game for the Gilbert softball team during its victory over Newman Catholic on July 5.

    Newton was the winning pitcher after giving up just one run on two hits with one strikeout and walk apiece in seven innings. At the plate, Newton finished 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.

    Jayden Peters, Collins-Maxwell

    Peters delivered a clutch hit for the 1A No. 5 Collins-Maxwell softball team during a 2-0 victory over Grundy Center on July 3 at Collins.

    Peters hit a solo home run to help Collins-Maxwell pull off the victory and end the regular season with a 24-3 record.

    Josie Theilen, Ames

    Theilen came up big offensively for the Ames softball team during its losses to Urbandale and Indianola last week.

    Theilen went 4-for-6 with two doubles, runs and RBIs apiece and one walk during the two games against Urbandale. In the loss to Indianola, Theilen finished 2-for-4 with a solo home run.

    Britney Jacobs, Colo-NESCO

    Jacobs led a balanced attack for the Colo-NESCO softball team during a 19-9 loss at Melcher-Dallas on July 3.

    Jacobs went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI for the Royals.

    Madeline Schonhorst, Ballard

    Schonhorst collected one of two hits for the Ballard softball team off North Polk ace Ava Husak during a 6-0 Bomber loss to the 4A No. 1 Comets on July 1 at Huxley.

    Schonhorst finished the game 1-for-3 with a double. She also threw out one base runner at catcher.

    Drew Banks, Colo-NESCO

    Banks threw seven strong innings to lead the Colo-NESCO baseball team past AGWSR in the 1A District 6 quarterfinals on July 6.

    Banks gave up one unearned run on seven hits, and he did not walk a batter in seven innings to earn the shutout victory. Banks finished the game with seven strikeouts, and he also was 1-for-2 with a single and a walk at the plate.

    Carter Geffre, Ames

    Geffre came up clutch at the plate, and he was an overpowering presence on the mound for the Ames baseball team during a 1-0 victory over Cedar Falls on Friday at Ames.

    Geffre hit a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the game. He finished the night a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, with one double and two singles to go along with his home run.

    On the mound, Geffre struck out 17 batters with just three walks, and he limited the Tigers to just three hits in 7 2/3 scoreless innings of work.

    Eli Rouse, Ballard

    Rouse threw 5 2/3 quality innings in defeat for the Ballard baseball team during its loss to No. 1 North Polk on July 1 at Alleman.

    Rouse held the Comets to two runs, one earned, on four hits and just one walk in 5 2/3 innings. He tallied seven strikeouts.

    Rouse also accounted for Ballard's only run on offense. He went 1-for-3 with a steal and a run.

    Kole Beving, Nevada

    Beving helped the Nevada baseball team even its season record at 12-12 with a 7-4 non-conference win over Union on senior night July 3 at Nevada Cubs Field.

    Beving went a perfect 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI, and he was also hit by pitch. He also closed out the win on the mound by throwing two scoreless innings with three strikeouts and no hits or walks allowed.

    Cael Faber, Roland-Story

    Faber threw a good game on the mound for the Roland-Story baseball team in a losing effort against 1A No. 3 Newman Catholic on July 1 at Mason City.

    Faber limited the Knights to five hits and three walks in six innings, but Roland-Story fell by a 2-0 score. Faber ended the game with one strikeout.
