    Amherst to open cooling center for this week’s heat

    AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP)– The Town of Amherst will be opening a cooling center in expectation of the extreme heat forecast for next week.

    The cooling center is free and open to the public and will located in the Glass Room of Bangs Community Center, 70 Boltwood Walk on the following dates:

    • Monday, July 15 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
    • Tuesday, July 16 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
    • Wednesday, July 17 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
    Northern flooding, rain to impact western Massachusetts

    The cooling center will be staffed by Community Responders for Equity, Safety, and Service (CRESS) and will offer chilled water. Additionally, the town offers other options for cooling off including:

    Groff Park Spray Pad, 72 Mill Lane -Free and open daily from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm [except for Tuesdays when the splash pad opens at 12:00 pm]

    Wading Pool at Mil River Recreation Area, 95 Montague Rd – Free and open daily from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm

    The public libraries are air-conditioned and will be open during their normal operating hours:

    Jones Library, 43 Amity Street

    • Monday from 9:00 am to 5:15 pm
    • Tuesday from 9:00 am to 8:15 pm
    • Wednesday from 9:00 am to 5:15 pm

    Munson Memorial Library, 1046 S East Street

    • Monday from 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm
    • Tuesday from 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm
    • Wednesday from 2:00 pm to 7:30 pm

    North Amherst Library, 8 Montague Road

    • Monday from 3:30 to 7:30 pm
    • Tuesday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm
    • Wednesday from 3:30 to 7:30 pm
