Thousands of Duke Energy customers in North Carolina lost power on Thursday when storms passed across central North Carolina.

As of 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, more than 16,000 customers in North Carolina were without power, according to Duke Energy's power outage map.

Approximately 3,000 outages were reported in Durham County at the time, and several hundred outages were reported in the vicinity of Whispering Pines and Henderson. In Greensboro, 5,000 people were without power, and in the Charlotte region, roughly 1,000 customers were without electricity.

Previously, approximately 6,000 people in the Sanford area of central North Carolina were without power during the largest outage. Affected areas also included the eastern Wake County (about 1,000 consumers) and the Carthage area (roughly 1,000 customers).

It was predicted that throughout the day, the primary concern in central North Carolina will be damaging winds. It was expected that the worst of the rain would fall throughout the afternoon, starting around lunchtime.
