Under The Tuscan Influence: Via Cassia In Hudson
New Hudson restaurant Via Cassia offers an authentic taste of Italy without ever leaving the Rural Intelligence region. Via Cassia opened its doors on Warren Street on March 14 in the former site of the beloved Ca’Mea Restaurant,. A fixture of the old-guard Hudson dining scene for two decades, it closed at the start of 2024. Fans of the previous restaurant will be glad to learn that the space passed to a chef committed to continuing and elevating the tradition of Italian cuisine.
From the kitchen of Barbara Beach
Sheffield— I have several recipes copied onto several kinds of pieces of paper in a file system in my kitchen. They say things like “pie,” “cakes,” “red meat,” or “pasta.” Tucked into my files is a little brown notebook of recipes that I recorded from my 9th grade home economics cooking class at North Junior High School in Pittsfield. My mother kept it for years and then included some of her favorite recipes. It is all tattered and stained now but it holds treasures of memories. My recipe for Calico Beans (baked beans with a twist) is written on the back of a big envelope, scribbled down after enjoying them at a friend’s house twenty-two years ago. If, heaven forbid, this house was ever on fire, I would run and grab my recipe files… and then my family photos.

Graham exhibit opens at NorthEast-Millerton Library
MILLERTON — Barbara Graham’s art will grace the walls of the NorthEast-Millerton Library through the end of July. Her exhibit, “Nature’s Mysteries,” which took about a year to complete, features what she labels as “Totems” inspired by objects she has found walking through nature and the town. Using everything from tree bark to twigs to fungi and more, Graham says the resulting art aids in thought clarification, similar to Shamanism which began in Tibet and India centuries ago.
DANCE REVIEW: ‘SMASHED2’ by Gandini Juggling at PS21
The Center for Contemporary Performance, or “PS21,” as it is known, is in Chatham, N.Y., just over the Massachusetts border and a reasonable drive from pretty much anywhere in Berkshire County. The venue had its first season in 2006, and being the proverbial new kid on the block, it is not as well known as some of its Berkshire County counterparts such as Shakespeare & Company and Barrington Stage Company, and certainly not yet in the league of Tanglewood or Jacob’s Pillow. Judging by the vision, energy, and drive of the organization, however, and its desire to truly be contemporary, innovative, and accessible and affordable to all, I am quite confident in the coming years PS21 will be spoken of in the same breath as these other venerable performing-arts institutions in the Berkshires.
