Mixson, Tomberlin top AHS’s Class of 2024

Andalusia High School’s valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 2024 were Emmalee Mixson and Ava Tomberlin, respectively.

Both graduates were glad to represent their senior class with these academic honors.

“Representing the class of 2024 as valedictorian means that I get to set an example of dedication and perseverance to the classes behind me. This allows me to leave a lasting impression on the culture of Andalusia High School,” Mixson said.

“It is an absolute honor to represent the class of 2024 as the salutatorian. Our class is an intelligent group of hard-working students that goes above and beyond to meet their goals. I am so thankful that I get to represent such an extraordinary class,” Tomberlin said.

Mixson plans to attend the University of Alabama in the fall and major in Psychology.

“I have always been passionate about mental health and serving others. I want to serve rural communities like Andalusia by bringing better mental health resources to places that lack them,” she said.

Tomberlin plans to attend Auburn University in the fall and major in Electrical Engineering.

“I chose the field of engineering because I love math and problem solving. Out of all the subjects in schools, math was always the subject that I did not mind studying for,” Tomberlin said.

The two named their involvement in extracurricular activities as the most enjoyable part of their time at AHS.

“The best part about attending Andalusia High School was having the opportunity to serve in numerous clubs. Whether improving my school through Peer Helpers or serving the community through FCCLA, our school always has a place to get plugged in,” Mixson said.

“The best part about being a student at Andalusia High School was the many traditions that you would get to be a part of. One specific example would be homecoming. AHS does homecoming like no other school, and it is so special to experience it as a student and make your mark,” Tomberlin said.

While Mixson and Tomberlin were glad to graduate, they named aspects of AHS they would not forget.

“I will most miss the small group of supportive teachers who cheered me on throughout high school. It is hard to find a staff as caring and wise as the one at Andalusia High School,” Mixson said.

“I will miss the friendships and connections made the most. Andalusia High School is home, and I knew that I could always ask for anything I needed. I will miss the people that make AHS so great,” Tomberlin said.

Both are ready to tackle the real world and see what lies ahead in the future.

“I anticipate the freedom to make more autonomous choices regarding my education and career. In the next five to 10 years, I will have my bachelor’s degree in Psychology and complete my MBA. I will begin establishing myself professionally within the mental health services industry. Above all else, I will follow the Lord’s path for my life and trust him to guide my next steps,” Mixson said.

“I am looking forward to the endless possibilities. I am so excited to put the talents that the Lord has blessed us each with to use. I am eager to make a difference. In the next five to 10 years, I see myself graduating from Auburn University and actively working as an electrical engineer. I could possibly see myself in Andalusia starting a family in the city I called home growing up,” Tomberlin said.

Emmalee is the daughter of Rob and Sara Mixson. She has one younger brother, John Robert Mixson. Ava is the daughter of John Tomberlin and Krystal Tomberlin with four siblings: Jerome Tomberlin, Madeline Martin, Annie Pierce, and Valerie Tomberlin.
