A resort-style pool with cabanas. An on-site movie theater. A dog park. Granite countertops. Velvet drapes.

Skytop Apartments , a new high-end residential space in Anderson, flaunts these luxuries and more.

After touring the apartments, I found it hard to believe the location on Beechmont Avenue was once occupied by a run-down motel and later a failed shopping center.

Background: What Skytop Apartments used to be

The " st o ried " El Rancho Rankin Motel was once on the plot of land where Skytop Apartments now stand. The motel, built in the early 1940s, was the place many travelers stayed after landing at Lunken Airport. Over time, the motel became rundown and closed in 1996 due to fire code violations.

In 1999, the site was redeveloped into the Skytop Shopping Center. By late 2018, Remke Markets , the last major tenant of the center, closed. The center was razed in fall 2021.

Developer Metropolitan Holdings started site work on Skytop Apartments in late 2021. The residential space opened to residents in July 2023 while construction was ongoing. Metropolitan Holdings finished construction in early 2024.

Over 50% of the units are currently occupied, a spokesperson for the apartments said.

Economics: What Skytop Apartments means for Anderson

The construction of Skytop Apartments was aligned with Anderson's plan to increase housing choices for all ages.

The community outlined a need for apartment housing to attract young people − who wish to return or stay in the area − and older residents − who desire walkability or no longer need large single-family homes, according to the Anderson Township 2021 Comprehensive Plan .
